Elder Candidate: Brett McIntosh

I am married to Jessica (JC) and we have one son, Wilder.

How did you come to know Jesus?

God saved me as a young child. I became a Christian at the age of eight. I had a limited understanding of the gospel, but I knew that I needed Jesus. Over the next ten years or so of my life, I claimed Jesus with my words but did not live a life worthy of the gospel. Though I was unfaithful, God was steadfast in his love and pursuit of me. In my late teenage years and early twenties, I had a time of "gospel awakening" where my eyes and heart were opened to understand and cherish the grace of Christ more than I ever had before. From that time, though I have often stumbled and believed the lie that life could be found outside of Jesus, God has kept me by his Spirit and continued to pour out unbelievable grace on me. I am so thankful that God has brought me into his family and is continuing to change me for his sake.

I enjoy cheering for / bemoaning the efforts of several sad sports teams. I love being told a good story through film, tv, or a book. I also love telling good stories. I can't play music at all, but I love hearing others do it well. I am learning to be a coffee snob and would eat chipotle 7 days a week if my wife would let me. One of my favorite things in the world is making my wife or son laugh.

Most Influential Books (Outside of the Bible)

Living the Cross Centered Life - CJ Mahaney
What is the Gospel - Greg Gilbert
This Momentary Marriage - John Piper
You Can Change - Tim Chester
Death by Love - Mark Driscoll

I am extremely grateful to have been raised in a family that loves Jesus and has always pointed me to him. The idea of God as a good father has never been a stumbling block to me. This in many ways was due to the grace of a good relationship with my earthly father. My mom cares deeply about people and always demonstrated this love through her words and actions. She has been a beacon of light for Jesus for as long as I can remember.

I have also been greatly influenced by a myriad of people throughout my life who have been faithful to proclaim the truth about Jesus. This includes pastors, friends, and family members. Many of these people are part of the Resonate family.

What are your big hopes / dreams for the Resonate Family?

My hope for Resonate is that we will be people who are increasingly growing in our love of the gospel and one another. I hope that we will never cease to be overwhelmed by God's amazing grace shown through Jesus and that this will really change our lives –– not just on Sunday, but to the very core of who we are as individuals and as a family. I hope our understanding and love of the gospel will make us different people, different from who we were, and different in the world. I want our church family to be a  light shining in Madison and Nashville for the fame and glory of Jesus and the good of our city.
